THE MANY FAILURES OF HON. ANAYO ONWUEGBU: A DEMAND FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN ANINRI/AWGU/OJI RIVER
The people of Aninri, Awgu and Oji River deserve more than political appearances, emergency visits and promises. They deserve effective, measurable and accountable representation.
Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu has been in the National Assembly representing this constituency, and the time has come for constituents to ask fundamental questions about what has actually changed in their communities.
1. WHERE IS THE DEVELOPMENT IMPACT?
The National Assembly record shows that Onwuegbu raised the abandoned Ivo Multi-Purpose Earth Dam project in October 2024. The parliamentary record stated that the project had reached about 80% completion before inadequate budgetary provision contributed to its abandonment, while flooding continued to devastate communities around the dam.
The question is simple: why should communities continue to suffer from a project that has been known for years to require completion?
2. THE OJI RIVER–AWGU ROAD CRISIS
In May/June 2026, a major section of the Oji River–Awgu Federal Road was cut off by severe erosion, disrupting movement and economic activity across the constituency. Onwuegbu subsequently inspected the damaged section and appealed to the Federal Ministry of Works for urgent intervention.
That intervention is welcome. But constituents are entitled to ask a bigger question:
Where is the preventive representation that ensures critical infrastructure does not repeatedly reach a state of collapse before urgent political intervention begins?
The Federal Controller of Works also identified inadequate drainage as a factor contributing to the road's vulnerability.
3. REPRESENTATION MUST BE MEASURED BY RESULTS
A lawmaker's responsibility is not merely to raise motions, make visits or issue appeals. The real test is whether those interventions translate into completed projects, functioning infrastructure, economic opportunities and tangible improvements in the lives of constituents.
The National Assembly's online profile for Onwuegbu currently lists no sponsored bills. That record should be clarified, especially because parliamentary proceedings separately document motions and legislative interventions associated with him.
4. EMPOWERMENT OR POLITICAL THEATRE?
There have also been media reports of constituent criticism concerning an empowerment programme involving motorcycles, sprayers, grinding machines and other items. Those reports contain allegations about the selection and priorities of beneficiaries, which should be independently verified rather than accepted as established fact.
But the broader question remains legitimate:
Are empowerment programmes designed around the long-term economic needs of Aninri, Awgu and Oji River, or are they primarily short-term distributions that disappear after the political ceremony?
5. ACCOUNTABILITY, NOT PROPAGANDA
Supporters of Hon. Onwuegbu point to roads, healthcare interventions, scholarships, skills acquisition and other programmes as evidence of performance. Those claims should be subjected to the same standard of scrutiny: What was promised? What was budgeted? What was actually delivered? Where is it located? How many constituents benefited? What is the current status?
This is not a demand for propaganda.
It is a demand for records, figures, locations, completion dates and measurable outcomes.
The people of Aninri/Awgu/Oji River are not asking for political drama. They are asking for accountability.
After all, representation is not measured by the number of photographs taken with constituents. It is measured by the quality of the roads they travel, the schools their children attend, the healthcare they can access, the opportunities available to their young people and the security of their livelihoods.
The time has come for Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu to give the people of Aninri, Awgu and Oji River a clear account of his stewardship — project by project, community by community, and promise by promise.
ANINRI. AWGU. OJI RIVER DESERVE ACCOUNTABLE REPRESENTATION
